    The Federal Work-Study (FWS) Program offers students an opportunity to earn money by working part time while gaining valuable work experience. At LaGuardia students have the option of working on or off campus. Students who have never participated must attend an orientation workshop available in the Student Financial Services Resource Center (C109).     • FWS Students must be registered and maintain an enrollment of at least 6 credits per semester, be matriculated and be in good academic standing.

    • All wages earned during intersession will be subject to FICA withholding

    • The last day of work for all FWS students for 2013-14 academic year, regardless of placement is Wednesday, July 30th, 2014.

     Important Dates for FWS Students
    • FWS students are responsible for monitoring their earnings, your award divided by your hourly rate will give you the maximum of hours you are allowed to work for the academic year.
    • FWS students who will graduate at the end of Fall 2013 semester must stop working by December 6th, 2013 (Session I) and February 18th, 2014 (Session II), the last days of Fall I & II 2013 classes.
    • FWS students who will graduate at the end of Spring 2014 semester must stop work by June 4th, 2014 (Session I) and July 30th, 2014 (Session II), the last days of Spring I & II 2014 classes. 
     Instruction for Completing Timesheet
    • Students can only be paid for hours actually worked.  Federal and state laws prohibits any deviation from this regulation.  An unpaid work break is mandatory if the student works more than five consecutive hours; one-half hour is the minimum break allowed.

    • All entries must be made in ink, and the supervisor must initial any changes made to a timesheet.

    • Certify the student's hours by signing your name in the space provided.

    • A student may work up to an average of 20 hours a week during the academic year unless the FWS Coordinator notifies you otherwise.  During certain periods, such as summer vacation, student may work full-time with permission of the college and supervisor.

    • Supervisors are responsible for making sure that students do not work in excess of the maximum number of hours of their FWS award. 

    • Timesheets are for a specific period in accordance with the Schedule of Payroll Periods.   There is only one payroll period per timesheet.  Do not split pay period.

    • Total hours for the day must not include breaks, lunch or supper periods. 

    • If the pay rate changes during the payroll period an additional timesheet is to be submitted starting with the beginning date of the new pay rate. 

    • Please ensure that you do not schedule a student to work during his or her scheduled classes. 

    • Completed timesheets must be mailed/inter-office to SFS Payroll (C113); the student may not submit them in person.   A late, improper completed or illegible timesheet will substantially delay payment. 

     Job Placement Process

    First year students or first time awardees must attend a FWS workshop prior to job placement.  The orientation workshops are schedule during the beginning of the Fall semester and available year round at the Resource Center (C109).  All returning awardees who wish to return to a prior job site must confirm with the site supervisor and complete a job contract packet for each academic year.  Any student changing work location will need to submit a change of location contract to the SFS Payroll Office (C113).
